Sunday Shrubbery.

A few months ago, my sister sent me a bottle of this in the mail.

I like drinks like this-alcoholic and non–that are interesting.  Savory.  Complex.

And this stuff really is just that.  Easy to prepare–you just pour a bit in a glass and top off with sparkling water.  It’s really refreshing and I just love it with foods that go well with that vinegar-y taste.  A bowl of broth, greens and dumplings–for instance.  It’s perfect.

So I have been bummed that the bottle was running low.  And is now OUT.

I have been missing my special beverage!

* * *

But today I am mixing my very first batch of Homemade Shrub.

I’ve always enjoyed shrub cocktails–but now think that I am ready to branch out and see if this is a more affordable way to drink this type of beverage in small, fresh batches.

I am using the recipes from Imbibe Magazine.  My first batch is strawberry basil.

I am trying this with Apple Cider Vinegar, though I may add a splash of balsamic, as well.  I put in Sugar in the Raw, as I didn’t have any refined sugar (which is just as well, I think).

Easy Peasy.  I have my fingers crossed.  I just have to leave it on the counter and shake it up once a day.

Next Sunday should be time for my first drink.

I will let you know how it goes.

Ps 1:  You can read about the history of shrub drinks here.  I love drinking *old* things.  And relish the idea of whipping up my own jars of “strawberry cordial.”  Now if you will excuse me, I need to go find a dang doily to put on top of that jar…

Ps 2:  If the thought of “drinking.  vinegar.” just does not appeal to you–I know!  I would have said the same thing.  But it is so refreshing.  So invigorating.  So try it!  You just may like it.  I know that I surely do…
